From: James Bell, Douglas County Taxpayers Coalition
Dear DCTC Supporters,
As you may know, advance
voting is underway for the July 15
Primary Election. One important race this year is for Chairman of the Board
of Commissioners.
Igor Malanchuk
(Igor2008.com ) is challenging the incumbent Tom Worthan (www.TomWorthan.net ) in the Republican Primary.
I am supporting and will be voting for Mr. Malanchuk
and here’s why.
Over the past several years I
have been active in monitoring the actions of our county government and have documented
a disturbing trend of government growth. In fact the rate of growth of
government is 3.5 times more than the
population growth.
Mr. Worthan
has supported increases in virtually ever tax and fee the county controls, yet
he still claims they need more revenue.
Last year, Mr. Worthan attempted to scare members
of the AARP by telling them if they don’t approve the SPLOST he will raise property taxes to cover
the cost of such projects as dog and horse parks and a YMCA. Voters rejected
the SPLOST.
One of the most disturbing
actions supported by Mr. Worthan was
the purchase of the Flagview Mobile Home Park for a massive $130 million jail that was just rejected by voters.
The property was assessed at
$3.9 million for tax purposes. The county’s appraisal of the property was $5.6
million. The price paid by the county
was $9 million. Why?
Mr. Worthan’s
“master plan” is to build a $130 plus
million jail near Interstate 20 on what is now some of the most valuable land
in our county.
The purchase of this land
left our county with no reserve funds
and resulted in the county having to borrow
$14 million to cover shortfalls. Also, we will lose the tax revenue from
the property they purchased.
This is just one example of
why I feel we need new leadership in
Douglas County.
As a fiscal conservative, I
believe Igor Malanchuk will offer taxpayers responsible management of our tax dollars. I have spoken with Mr. Malanchuk about taxation
and I am convinced he has the knowledge, ability and leadership qualities to
manage our county and control spending
Please consider voting for Igor Malanchuk by asking for a
Republican ballot on July 15.
When and where to
vote: ADVANCE VOTING JULY 7TH - 11TH will be held at Deer
Lick Park, Boundary Waters Aquatic Center, the Old Douglas County Courthouse,
and the new Douglas County Courthouse from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday,
July 7th - 11th.
Vote July 15 at your precinct.
