IT'S LOOKING GRIM for Greater Rome property-tax bills next year.
With
House Speaker Glenn Richardson now talking up the permanent elimination
of the homestead tax-relief credit, after Gov. Sonny Perdue supposedly
temporarily erased it this year to deal with the state's budget crisis,
its survival could be in deep trouble. The generally saner heads in the
Senate, also dominated by Republicans, may have difficulty holding
their ground against the combined force of a lame duck governor (who
doesn't seem to care much anymore about the damage he's doing) and a
would-be gubernatorial candidate who believes you can fool all of the
people all of the time.

Have you received your property tax assessments from Douglas
County? Has your assessment
increase? You can appeal!
You have a right to appeal the value to the county tax
assessors either followed by an appeal to the board of equalization or to
arbitration and in either case, to appeal to the Superior Court.
If you wish to file an appeal, you must do so in writing no
later than 45 days after the date of the notice. If you miss the dead line,
your right to appeal will be lost for this year.

(SB 177, Act 431,
1999 Session)
Act 431 was signed April 30, 1999 with a January 1, 2000 effective date.
The bill has two main thrusts:

prevention of indirect tax increases resulting
from increases to existing property values in county due to inflation,
·
an enhancement of an individual property owner's
rights when objecting to and appealing an increase made by a county board of tax
assessors to the value of the owner's property.

Douglasville Ga.-April 18, 2008: James Bell, Director of the
Douglas County Taxpayers Coalition (DCTC) (www.DouglasTaxes.com) asked the
Douglasville, Georgia City Council to move the proposed property tax bond vote
from Tuesday September 16 to November’s General Election date.
Bell made his
views known at the Thursday night city council work session in response to
agenda item 8.1 to adopt a resolution on for a referendum on a General
Obligation Bond to pay for the proposed “Public Safety and Municipal
Court Building”.
