Supporters of the Douglas County Taxpayers Coalition (DCTC) were
threatened with arrest last week at the public library in Douglasville while
distributing SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) vote information.
On August 15 James Bell, director of DCTC, and other
anti-tax activists were handing out literature around the county, including on
the sidewalk in front of the public library, when a government employee approached
two of them and advised them they can not distribute the literature on
government property because “they support the SPLOST”.

in the September 18th Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST)
will be Monday August 20.
The one cent sales tax (which
ended July 1, 2007), if approved by voters, could cost taxpayers over $200 million
over six years in taxes and over $80 million in interest and fees over the
life of the 12 year bond. Plus an increase in property taxes to cover the
remaining cost of the $120 million proposed prison facility and additional
operational and maintenance cost for decades to come.

Douglas County Board of Commissioners
May 11, 2007
Dear Commissioners:
It has come to our attention
that a YMCA could possibly be included in the SPLOST voting in September of
this year. We want to express to you our opposition to a tax‑exempt YMCA and
our hope that you will see the wisdom in preventing this from becoming a
reality. We have provided proven, detailed information within this opposition
package on why a YMCA will become an unfair, tax‑exempt competitor and tax
burden by selling subsidized fitness to adults who can pay their own way. This
clearly subverts the purpose of tax exemption.

Some governments perform needs analyses before deciding to conduct projects or
construct buildings.
Douglas County
and Douglasville governments, though, listen to what a few residents want and
promise to provide it.
Douglasville's plan to build a community center with SPLOST (Special Purpose
Local Option Sales Tax), to be operated by the YMCA, has raised the question of
the need for such a center in Hunter Park.
