2007 SPLOST - 2007/02/18 09:24 Vote no on every bond, and SPLOST issue that comes up. The county needs to live within its means.

What happened to all the "Mall" money? Just as some of us thought at the time it was mentioned, it was all "smoke and mirrors".

As long as they refuse to have impact fees, why should we subsidise the growth in this county to make more money for the developers. I know the developers don't pay impact fees, the buyer does, so save that comment. Impact fees are simple "you caused us to have to build it, so you pay for it" laws. What could be more fair?

As long as we keep voting to give them more money the politicians will never stop spending the money.

Cut off the money, and the growth will slow down.

Re:2007 SPLOST - 2007/02/22 11:39 My thoughts also.

I am trying to determine the locations for the planned new schools but have not had any calls returned. In previous discussion with the school board, the eastern part of Douglas County was identified has having the most "urgent" need. Surely, with a specfic dollar amount known for the SPLOST and their telling us the number of specific types of schools needed, tentative locations for these schools must also be known. In addition, I am also trying to determine what shortfalls remain unfunded for which, I'm guesssing, we'll be later asked for more money. Just how much of the overall classromm shortfall does this temp. "fix"?

Re:2007 SPLOST - 2007/02/27 09:35 Consider this:
1. According to BOE, there are few parcels of land large enough to accommodate schools. If land can not be located, eminent domain will be used to take enough property for this use. This means your home or business can be taken from you. BOE expects to pay $40,000 per acre for land near the sewer line.
2. Regardless of where a school is built, district lines can be moved to adjust the school population.
3. Without knowing where new schools will be built the public is less likely to support this measure. With the annexation of Douglasville and the amount of apartments, we can assume the schools will be placed to accommodate this.
4. According to BOE, they do not expect to have any short falls with the bond and all schools will be built within budget. Costs of the schools are estimates. Given the history of over runs in the county for building projects, there is no way to know the actual cost.

Re:2007 SPLOST - 2007/03/06 01:39 PC, you are right. Cutting off the money will work. They will be forced to slow the growth. As long as we feed the fire they are going to burn us. SLOW GROWTH means SLOW MONEY! What are they thinking? We just defeated the SPLOST. Do they think we have memory loss? I'm for improving park and rec. and roads. It's a shame they want to put a $100 million jail on the ballot at the same time. At some point these departments will get pissed off about using them to try to sale the jail idea. If the jail fails again roads and rec will be without the extra money. Tom Worthan is up for re-election next year. Or is he? Some say he is not runninng. The defeat of his brother in law by a black man has sent a message that his families popularity is waning. This may explain his actions. We should demand they move the SPLOST vote to Novemeber instead of Sept.. If that bil on special elections pass it will F&%k them up and limit when they can hold tax elections. HB 296 I think is the one. It needs to pass. CT
